Legal Zoom has hidden charges that are descreetly shown and backed up with percentages of who choose to accept or decline. I found this actually funny. What a great way to make money and further back it up with numbers-FANTASTIC! They must be raking it in! I want to be like Legal Zoom and rake it in too!!!! I sat on the phone with my accountant and went through the entire website. Before I did this I talked with an attorney who put it all in laymens terms. Because I had another set of eyes to answer questions, I found it very easy to accomplish my goal of creating my LLC.

Last year, my brother was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, the prognosis wasn't good by the time it was discovered, it was already at an advanced stage (pancreatic cancer). We scrambled to get a Living Trust together, since he wasn't married and had no children. I wanted to use an attorney, but my brother was in no mood to speak to a stranger about his finances and these types of delicate estate planning issues. So instead, I asked him what he wanted to do with his house and brokerage account (his main assets). Based on a friend's recommendation, I went to LegalZoom for a Living Trust and a Power of Attorney for health care (which they call a Living Will). It was generally easy to use, and they had a guide that I read before I completed the questionnaire. After they sent the documents to me by mail, I still had to complete another form for the house, and then they had to send the deed for my brother to sign, but otherwise the process was straight-forward and private. I contacted the brokerage to see what I needed to do to transfer the account, and simply had to open a new account in the name of the trust and then transfer the assets into the new account. A little tedious, but not that difficult. My brother didn't have a lot of other assets, but I could see how this could become a hassle if he had numerous accounts and investments. This spring, the cancer spread and my brother lost his battle. I was named as the trust administrator, so I contacted a local attorney for help. It still cost some money for the attorney's help, but everything worked out as planned. And the attorney said it was MUCH less than he would have charged if it was a Will and had to go through probate. Overall, I was very pleased with LegalZoom. If you don't mind doing some of the work yourself, in terms of changing the names on the accounts and such, I'd would recommend them without reservations.

I just wanted to say that I had a really surprising experience with Legal Zoom. What was almost a disaster was turned around by a customer representative named Tanya. When I submitted my LLc paperwork, I made a mistake in adding the shares allocated to an investor in the company. It was several days before I caught it. When I called Legal Zoom, Tanya answered and told me that the paperwork had already been submitted to the state and there wasn't much that could be done now! Well, I was obviously disappointed and Tanya asked me to hold on. She personally contacted the VP of Business Services who fixed the issue himself. I don't know what they did... resubmitted the paperwork, or amended them, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that Tanya and the folks at Legal Zoom really went above and beyond.

Having just started my 4th business (hopefully a successful one), I thought I knew everything about starting a business from scratch. That was obviously not the case. For the first 3 businesses, I formed 3 separate LLCs with the help of a local attorney. I think I paid close to $2000 for each! I thought I was getting a good deal. But I remember thinking that these LLCs were very simple, especially since all 3 LLCs were set up exactly the same. When I started the 4th company, I heard about LegalZoom on the radio. So I decided to give them a try. I went online, completed the questionnaire, and submitted my payment. The process was very simple, and the best part was that they would send me email updates regarding the status of my LLC filing. (your company name is available, documents have been sent to the Secretary of State, your LLC has been formed, here is your filing number, your tax ID number has been obtained, etc.). All this for less than $500. I even got a company kit, with custom stock certificates, seal, and more. When compared to the first 3 LLC formed through an attorney, I have to say Legalzoom's service was by far the best deal. I still remember calling the lawyer countless times for status checks and such....Kinda frustrating especially paying $2K for each LLC. Still wondering why he never gave me a discount(???). Forgive me for writing on and on about LegalZoom....but I just thought people should know. From one entreprenuer to another.... One last note: I still use my lawyer for complicated matters litigation, contracts, and legal advice......but not for simple matters like setting up a simple LLC or registering a trademark. I'm serious. I had to go back to my lawyer 4 times and it had already cost me about $900 for what I did for about $60 at legalzoom. After the forth time, I said forget it and went online. I did everything I wanted to do, they sent it to me on paper more professional than what my lawyer (it's a small thing i know, but for $900 you'd expect better than printer paper!). They gave me instructions on how to check it and sign it, the witnesses I needed to have watch me sign it, and how to make changes in the future. I'd definitely use the service again. My husband said we should have made a living trust and legalzoom offers that, too.

Legalzoom was fast, efficient and easy. My paperwork presented no problems, and it was pushed right through the court system. This was a difficult situation for me, but at least I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg to have a lawyer do it.
